What exactly are you trying to do? The exact command and the exact error
messages, please.
The only explanation I can make up 6 AM is that you trying to untar a
file that is not a tar file but a simple gzipped text file.
Try command
gzip -dc foo.gz | less
You probably don't wat to uncompress those files but to pipe the file to
your favourite pager.
