Hello,
I've just gotten my multimedia keyboard fully functional under
Linux/XFree86, having gotten information from a variety of HOWTOs and
websites, and quite a lot of guesswork.
Getting it all together was a bit tiring... I would therefore like to
contribute a Multimedia Keyboard mini-HOWTO which will be a one-stop
resource to making the "Play", "Pause", "Volume", "Sleep" etc. keys
useful in XFree86 (and perhaps the console, later).
The basic coverage would be:
1. Detecting and mapping the keys (xev, xmodmap, etc.)
2. Obtaining and installing third-party software
e.g. cdctl, cdcd, xmms, aumix, xmacro, etc.
3. A wrapper script for those software
- autodetection of CD type (audio/video/mp3/data, etc.)
- variable execution depending on CD type
4. Getting the window manager to process those keys
5. Patches to existing software and libraries (e.g. SDL, smpeg-xmms)
6. Other tips
Hmmm.... It may not be that "mini"... ;)
What do you think? Should I go ahead? Thanks!
Regards,
Alex
