Not sure if this is the reason, but there is a drawback when using the
CM fonts if you want to generate PDF or PS files. While Times is usually
available on every PDF and PS output device, the CM fonts need to be
embedded into the file. Not only does this increase the file size, but
it also looks worse, because quite frequently you only get bit mapped
fonts; using Times gives you a vector font. As long as you stick to DVI
you are better off using CM fonts, though.
