I would have to concur.
Rick Moen was impolitic in his reply, but did either pre-apologize
or apologize for that style early on.
I feel that bluntness is ok, but perhaps am not sensitive enough
to the transition into rudeness. I skimmed the thread, and to
my mind Rick did not cross the line. Others are free to differ.
What was happening in the thread was that the discussion quickly
reached a point where everybody was asking everybody else to
do work for the benefit of everybody, and nobody was acquiescing
and willing to do the work.
At that point (IMO) what should happen in the future is that
everybody should shut up, stop justifying their positions,
and realize that an impasse is reached; no fault, no harm.
If we want to we can fault the entire list for not reaching
this conclusion early on.
There. Now everyone can feel suitably shameful or justified
as suits their temperament. :-)
On a related note, I would like to take the opportunity
to thank the person who's name I can't recall who
stepped up and volunteered to work on the howto in question.
