I think this is a good idea. Having access to a larger pool of volunteers
might help with tasks like translation, Docbook encoding, etc, so that LDP
can reach a larger audience, and is more accessible to general technical
writers.

I would like to hear more about what specific advantages/costs would be
associated with joining SPI though.

Cheers,

A several months ago I started a discussion about getting an EIN
number from the IRS but found that it wouldn't help much. Then the
discussion changed to possible incorporation of LDP but nothing
happened. So now I'm proposing that we become a part of "Software in
the Public Interest" (SPI) if they will accept us. That way we remain
independent but are incorporated under the umbrella organization, SPI.

One significant reason for doing this is so that we can use "Volunteer
Match" to recruit volunteers. I'm not sure it will help all that much
but I think that it's worth a try. We will likely recruit people that
have free time and are actively searching the Internet for volunteer
opportunities. They will be the ones who want to work at a "virtual"
location and select the category "Computers and Technology". They may
not know Linux all that well but at least they will have free time to
work on it, otherwise they wouldn't be seeking volunteer work.

To do this, I don't think we need any by-laws, etc. Our manifesto is
sort of a substitute for by-laws. It would be nice to have a leader
however. I've been reading old emails that I never got around to
reading and realize that Guylhem did a lot of work arranging for LDP
to have a presence at some Linux expositions, etc. So do you agree
that I (or we) should ask SPI to take us under their umbrella?

I understand that the way it works is that we are free to leave SPI if
we decide to. Then we would no longer be incorporated and would
probably want to incorporate on our own if we found it advantageous to
be a corporation. I'll need to look into how SPI would handle and
invest our money.
