Editing Docbook without some handy XML helpers is not fun at all.
I would only do it with a true XML editor like jEdit
http://www.jedit.org + XML plugin, that has grammar-aware completions,
as well as abbreviations, to make typing
(and closing) the tags a lot easier.

The kind of assistance provided by the XML plugin makes learning
Docbook a *LOT* easier. And yes, you wouldn't want to edit files
inside a web browser (most of the time), because you want some
quick/convenient way of doing a parse/validate.
