Your tools aren't set up to process linuxdoc markup, and the particular
file you've used (big-howto-template-ld.sgml) is linuxdoc. To be
specific, openjade is trying to process docbook sgml, not linuxdoc sgml.
When you visit the author's resource page
(http://www.tldp.org/authors/index.html#resources), go to the Authoring
Templates and grab one of the first two in the list. It seems you had
chosen the third one.
If you still want to figure out the linuxdoc sgml, you can go a little
further down the above page and find the sections Linuxdoc Information
and Linuxdoc Processing, which will tell you how to work with this
markup. But if you want to use the docbook sgml or xml file I noted
above (which is what openjade is looking for), you should get the
desired output when you run the command you used below.
